Many people believe that America is a secular nation, of no god or creed. This is inaccurate. America is a divine nation. The body politic is corporeal and exists directly underneath the National Mall. Simply consider the facts.
We must begin with the creation. Many cultures see the world as being born, or splitting out of a great cosmic egg. America was conceived in liberty. It is therefore only appropriate that the monument to the Father of our Nation, George Washington, is a vast priapic edifice. He sprung from nothing, for the land where he was born is called Virginia. Columbia, of which the city is but a district, is the female representation of the land. It was from the entrance of uncounted millions into Columbia’s virgin land that America came.
It is written that she was conceived in liberty. That is so. But while conceived in liberty it was tainted by sin and iniquity. The stain of slavery was our original sin. George Washington is the Demiurge, a being of goodness and evil alike. He created the world in all its aspects, until its sins be redeemed by another.
Let us proceed up the body. The Mall is a great torso. Upon the torso one wears the garments one wishes to exhibit to the world. In like fashion, the Mall is lined with museums. At the head is the Capitol. It was the Tribunes who spoke for the people, in the time of the Roman Republic — now the Speaker of the House represents the legislature. With the Senate, they read out the laws which govern the nation. From them spring words in abundance.
Above the Capitol are the brains of the nation, the Supreme Court. It is written that he shall judge the living and the dead, and so the Court adjudicates all. To enter the Egyptian underworld, the dead’s soul was weighed against a feather. Outside the court are the scales of justice. Justice is blind, for one sees only when the scales have fallen from one’s eyes.
Running from its shoulder, down the arm is Pennsylvania Avenue. Tucked under its arm, like a book, is the National Archives. At its base, where the right hand would be, is the White House. It is the executive branch, and holds power over the nation. For thus it is written, “You shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power”. But who is the Son of Man?
The Temple of Abraham Lincoln is located at the base of the Mall. We can tell the orientation from the surrounding neighborhood — the one parallel to the Lincoln Memorial is “Foggy Bottom”, and thus its polarity can be inferred. It is known that the stability of the whole is dependent upon the feet — it is written in the book of Daniel that a great idol whose feet are made of clay shall fall. And likewise, that you cannot build a house on sandy foundations. That it is at the feet calls to mind the anointing of the feet before the passion. Abraham Lincoln was the giver of freedom; it was he who freed the slaves from their chains of bondage; and was killed, but lives eternally in the heart of his countrymen. It is evident that Abraham Lincoln was the Son of Man who redeemed our country.
Consider too his birth. As a babe his family left their home land, having to flee a terrible danger. South of his land was Cairo; to the north, a great lake. He was of humble origins; no man taught him, but his knowledge was advanced beyond his years. Paul wrote approvingly that his knowledge sprung from direct inspiration, not from teachers — thus it was a virtue in Lincoln too. As a young man, he split wood for rails and fences. His ascent to national prominence was sudden and unexpected. He traveled the land, arguing with the old school of thought. The Gospel he preached was a new one, for, as he said, “The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate for the stormy present.” It was one of equality. “As I would not be a slave, so too would I not be a Master,” he said. “That expresses my ideal of democracy.” His coming was announced by John Brown. The abolitionist William Weston Patton wrote:
“John Brown was John the Baptist of the Christ we are to see—
Christ who of the bondmen shall the Liberator be,
And soon throughout the Sunny South the slaves shall all be free,
For his soul is marching on.”
His words are precise, and prophetic. Lincoln inherited a kingdom wracked with dissension — it is written that a house divided against itself cannot stand. The promised land was divided, North and South. War between good and evil was joined. Lincoln performed many miracles. But the forces of evil seemed invincible. For three days, the agony on the battlefield continued. But at the end, the sacrifice had been paid. Evil was at an end in the world. America was created on the 4th of July — it is no coincidence that it was born again on that same day.
Consider the text of the Gettysburg Address. He begins by telling of the genealogy of the nation; “four score and seven years ago, our father brought forth on this continent a new nation.” It was, as noted before, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. But it has been reborn — it has had a new birth of freedom. To be reborn implies having died, and thus, resurrection. It will be the case that “these dead shall not have died in vain”. Instead, the triune divinity of government for the people, by the people, and of the people, shall live eternally.
You must forgive some temporal dislocation of events. All the essential parts are there, but they may not be in the proper order. He was struck down by a traitor. Toward the end he breathed strongly and deeply; and laying his head to the side, he expired.
What then, lies under DC? Admiral Yamamoto said that by attacking Pearl Harbor, Japan had awakened a sleeping giant. Yamamoto was not speaking metaphorically — he had been a naval attaché in DC, and doubtless learned the true nature of the Mall. In times of greatest peril, it will rise up, and smite the enemy. John Brown’s body lies a-mouldering in the grave, but when the time comes, he will go to be a soldier in the army of the Lord.
Fun read, very Unsong.
